Macquarie University (North Ryde) location, Australia  invites application for Postdoctoral Opportunities – 2019 from eligible and interested candidates

About-  The Department of Biological Sciences at Macquarie University is a vibrant and collegial community of teachers, researchers and students working across a wide range of biological disciplines. We are a leading research department, conducting research at all levels of biological organisation as well as across a diversity of taxa. Our areas of research strength are conservation biology, ecology, evolution and animal behaviour. Emerging areas of research strength are biosecurity (invasive pests and pathogens), urban ecology and climate change adaptation.  Click here to find out more about the Department of Biological Sciences.

Macquarie is a university engaged with the real and often complex problems and opportunities that define our lives. Since our foundation 54 years ago, we have aspired to be a different type of university. Over the years, we’ve grown to become the centre of a vibrant local and global community.

Your collaborative approach to working with others will ensure you perform effectively within a multi-disciplinary environment. If you are an excellent communicator with a proactive nature and are flexible and resilient in your approach, then this is a role you will thrive in and a department you will enjoy working with.

Essential

  • PhD in Biological Sciences, with emphasis on arthropod behaviour or related disciplines;
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and work independently without close supervision;
  • Relevant experience with assessment, quantification and analysis of insect behaviour;
  • Ability to devise and implement a wide range of ecologically relevant tests of behavioural and physiological performance;
  • Experienced at generating practical pest management solutions through basic science;

Desirable

  • Understanding of the fundamentals of sterile insect technique
  • Understanding of standard fruit fly quality control procedures
  • Familiarity with literature related to assessment of sexual and ecological competence of Queensland fruit fly and other tephritid fruit flies

Job/Position Description-  The Department of Biological Sciences is currently seeking a suitably qualified Postdoctoral Research Fellow join a multi-disciplinary team working on Hort Innovation project FF17000 “Sex Selection Genes from Fruit Fly Species for use in SITplus”. This project aims to identify genes associated with pupal colour and thermal lethality in Mediterranean fruit fly, Oriental fruit fly and Melon fly, and to use gene editing techniques to generate these phenotypes in Queensland fruit fly.  The primary role of the position is to implement standard quality control procedures as well as other biologically relevant behavioural and physiological assays to assess the performance of new Queensland fruit fly lines developed using gene editing and other techniques.

  • Salary Package: From $90,188 – $96,655 (Level A) p.a., plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Appointment Type:  Full-time, fixed term (3 years).

The successful applicant will work with Professor Phil Taylor, to:

  • Implement standard UN-FAO/IAEA quality control procedures to assess baseline production quality of Queensland fruit fly genetic lines developed using CRISPR-Cas9
  • Implement, and as needed develop, non-standard approaches to assess biological performance of Queensland fruit fly genetic lines developed using CRISPR-Cas9 especially in relation to sexual and ecological competence
  • Conduct traditional selection experiments to assess heritability and stability of key traits of interest
