Designation/Position- Post-Doc Position
University of Twente, Netherlands invites application for Post-Doc Position from eligible and interested candidates
About- The BIOS Lab-on-a-Chip chair (“Miniaturized systems for biomedical and environmental applications”) aims at the research and development of Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) systems. The BIOS group is embedded within the TechMed Centre, and the MESA+ institute for Nanotechnology. MESA+ is one of the world’s largest nanotechnology research institutes; and it’s the largest research institute in this field in the Netherlands.
Research in this project will be conducted in close collaboration with the Analytical Biochemistry group at the University of Groningen (www.biomac.nl) in the field of electrochemistry-mass spectrometry related to the further development of electrochemical, site-specific peptide bond cleavage in proteins, and electrochemically-driven conversions of drug molecules.
Research/Job Area- Chemistry
Project Title- Surface Enhanced Spectroscopy to Study Electrochemical Reactions In A Microfluidic Chip
Location- University of Twente, Netherlands
Eligibility/Qualification–Research group is looking for a candidate with a PhD in analytical chemistry. Most importantly that includes experience in electrochemistry. Additionally experience with any of the used analytical methods such as infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, or mass spectrometry is greatly appreciated. Moreover, knowledge or experience in operating microfluidic chips is considered as another key advantage. The candidate should be able to work independently, and have excellent theoretical and experimental skills. Fluent command of English is required.
Most importantly, the BIOS Lab-on-a-Chip group in general, and this project in particular are very challenging multidisciplinary environments. It is therefore essential to show willingness to look beyond disciplinary boundaries, to learn new techniques and skills required for this project. This post-doctoral researcher position involves frequent travel between the research groups in Groningen and Enschede. Willingness to conduct such travel is mandatory.
Job/Position Description- Electrochemistry is a well-studied method for the mimicry of drug metabolism that is complementary to other in vitro techniques like liver microsomal incubations. Additionally, exciting developments have been reported in recent years with respect to protein analysis comprising the electrochemical reduction of disulfide bonds, important for biopharmaceutical protein analysis, and the specific cleavage of peptide bonds, relevant for proteomics.
In this project, the aim is to develop microfluidic chips for in-situ analysis to gain a better understanding of the reactions occurring at the electrode-solution interface. This microfluidic chip will contain ordered nanofabricated structures for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), or structures for surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS). SEIRAS and SERS are two complementary methods, since vibrations active in SERS are inactive in SEIRAS and vice versa. Moreover, enhancement of the spectroscopic methods is essential to lower the limit of detection.
This post-doctoral position focusses on using the developed SERS and SEIRAS devices to study relevant reactions in the field of proteomics and drug screening in detail.
For detailed information and to get a better impression of the kind of work in this project, the following papers are recommended:

This is a Post-doctoral researcher position for the duration of 3 years. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities. The gross monthly salary starts at € 3173,- (scale 10, level 4) gross per month excluding allowances in accordance with the job profile ‘post-doctoral researcher’, under the University System for Job Classification (UJC).
How to Apply- Please submit your application using the on-line form at https://www.utwente.nl/en/organization/careers/, including a C.V. and motivation letter. The deadline for submission is December 15th 2018. Please do NOT send your C.V. and motivation letter by email. Applicants without a PhD degree do not need to apply, as we are specifically looking for a prospective postdoctoral researchers.
