Job Description
The successful candidate will lead an ambitious interdisciplinary project investigating how cellular metabolism shapes leukemia persistence, immune evasion, and anti-leukemia immunity. Utilizing mechanistic leukemia models, multi-omics, and immunology tools, the project explores how leukemia cells adapt under therapeutic pressure and interact with the immune system.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, perform, and interpret mechanistic experiments, including in vivo mouse tumor models and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation models.
- Investigate metabolic adaptation of leukemia under therapeutic pressure and the effects of leukemia-derived metabolites on immune recognition and function.
- Establish and adapt experimental approaches including spectral flow cytometry, CRISPR screens, single-cell/spatial transcriptomics, and metabolomics/lipidomics.
- Analyze, interpret, and present scientific findings at local and international conferences.
- Mentor MSc and PhD students within the research group.
- Contribute actively to scientific manuscripts and grant applications.
Eligibility & Qualification
- Education: A PhD or equivalent degree in cancer biology, immunology, molecular biology, hematology, or a related life sciences discipline.
- Technical Expertise: Substantial hands-on experience with in vivo mouse tumor models (preferably hematological cancers) and a commitment to animal experimentation.
- Laboratory Skills: Extensive experience with (spectral) flow cytometry, cell sorting, and standard molecular biology techniques.
- Track Record: A proven track record of scientific productivity, ideally highlighted by at least one high-quality, first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Soft Skills: High intellectual curiosity, independent problem-solving skills, and excellent communication skills in English within an international, interdisciplinary environment.
- Desirable: Previous experience with leukemia biology, cancer metabolism, histology, or CRISPR screening is considered an advantage.
What We Offer
- Cutting-edge research in leukemia immunology and metabolism within an internationally recognized research environment.
- Access to state-of-the-art facilities for flow cytometry, advanced imaging, metabolomics, genomics, and animal experimentation.
- Dedicated mentorship, career-development support, and scientific freedom to build an independent research profile.
- A collaborative, diverse, and inclusive working atmosphere in the heart of Basel.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit their application online with the following documents:
- A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV) including a complete publication list.
- A copy of your most important original publication demonstrating your experimental expertise.
- A brief statement describing your past research achievements, scientific interests, and motivation for joining the Apostolova Lab.
- Contact information for 2 to 3 academic references.
