  • A PhD awarded or submitted, in a relevant discipline area, such as Theoretical Computer Science, Algorithms, Mathematics with a computing major, Cryptography and Information Security/Privacy
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in one or more of the following areas: Design and analysis of algorithms, Differential Privacy framework, Applied Cryptography, Probabilistic and statistical framework, machine learning and Information theory
  • Demonstrated experience in the collection and processing of large data sets, development of efficient algorithms on large datasets, and development of security or privacy-preserving algorithms, protocols for processing and sharing data or analytics and large-scale measurement studies of privacy and security risks
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a research team, and the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research
  • An outstanding track record of publication in top peer reviewed journals and prestigious conferences in security and privacy, machine learning and information systems conferences
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • A track record of science innovation and creativity including the ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations


  • Previous experience or research in either theoretical frameworks for Privacy preserving algorithms or data-driven quantification and risks assessment and attacks identification
  • Experience with software development processes and programming languages such as C, Python, Java or Web programming

Job/Position Description- Research group is  seeking two Postdoctoral Fellows to join a team of talented world-renowned researchers to work on different aspects of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) from the development of theoretical framework with cryptographic or information theoretical approaches, to the empirical and data-driven analysis of real-life applications and datasets. The outcome of this research will have both research and practical applications.

The two successful candidates will be involved in:

  • Designing algorithms and protocols that enable the sharing and release of sensitive datasets and/or the analysis of data for different application scenarios
  • Analysis, measurement and quantification of privacy and security risks in current deployments of systems with a focus on end-users and consumers. This includes developing experimental testbeds and measurement platforms to characterise and assess privacy risks and identify information leakage in existing systems
  • Examining and introducing variants of provable privacy definitions that improve trade-off between privacy and utility

The successful candidate will closely interact with both academics, undergraduate and postgraduate students from Macquarie University’s four faculties involved in activities within the Cyber security Hub: Faculty of Science and Engineering, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Human sciences.

Also, the successful candidate will contribute to efforts in building trustworthy, reliable and secure systems within the Information Security and Privacy Group of the Department of Computing at Macquarie University.

Salary PackageFrom $88,420 to $94,760 p.a. (Level A Step 6 to step 8; PhD required) plus 17% employer’s superannuation contribution and annual leave loading
