PhD opportunities in Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

Postdoctoral fellow in Sweden, Chalmers University of Technology

Designation/Position- PhD student position

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden invites application for
PhD opportunities from eligible and interested candidates

About-

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering has about 290 employees encompassing a broad theoretical knowledge base, from engineering and natural sciences to the social sciences and the humanities, as well as design-based, artistic research. The combination of all of these perspectives allows for great interdisciplinary advancement in the field and a broader discussion of various aspects of sustainability. Together, we provide a comprehensive environment for architecture, civil- and environmental engineering, well equipped to take on the common challenges of building a sustainable future.

Information about the division
The Division of Water Environment Technology (WET) brings together scientists with expertise in process engineering, hydraulics, environment, and sustainability. As a PhD student, you will belong to the environmental biotechnology/wastewater engineering research group. Our group currently carries out research on a range of biological process technologies related to wastewater treatment.

Research/Job Area- Microbiology/biotechnology/microbial electrochemistry

Location- Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

Eligibility/Qualification–
The applicant should have a Master of Science or equivalent degree in microbiology, biotechnology, or a related field. Experience of laboratory work and good English skills are required. Meriting experiences include work with: biological reactors, analytical instruments, electrochemical systems, microbial community analysis, or bioinformatics. An interest in computer programming is also meriting as computational methods will be used in the study of complex microbial communities.

Job/Position Description-

As a PhD student in our group, you will carry out research on microbial communities growing on electrode surfaces in bioelectrochemical systems. Some living microorganisms are capable of transferring electrons to or from solid electrodes. This phenomenon could have many practical applications. For example, bioelectrochemical system have been investigated for conversion of organic compounds in wastewater into electrical energy, production of energy carriers and chemicals, recovery of metals, and use as biosensors.

In this PhD project, you will focus on microbial communities that oxidize organic compounds and generate electrical current at an anode. You will investigate how the microbial communities assemble and develop over time, and how various factors affect their composition and performance. You will build, operate and analyze the performance of bioelectrochemical systems and you will use molecular tools such as PCR and high-throughput sequencing to study the microbial communities.

The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research studies. As a PhD student you are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position may include up to 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties in the Master program ”Infrastructure and Environmental Engineering” and the undergraduate program in Civil Engineering.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The employment is expected begin in the spring of 2019 and is limited to four years plus the time spent on departmental work (a maximum of five years in total).
