2 Doctoral Researchers in Bicarbonate-to-CO Electrolysis – University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany

Postdoc in Germany

Job Summary

The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is inviting applications for two Doctoral Researcher positions within the Faculty of Engineering. The successful candidates will work on the project “Direct Bicarbonate-to-CO Electrolysis: Unlocking Green Syngas for a Resilient, Fossil-Free Chemical Industry (Bicarb2Syn).” This initiative aims to replace fossil-based syngas production with a green electrochemical process using atmospheric CO2.

DesignationDoctoral Researcher (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter*innen)
Research AreaElectrochemical Process Development, Particle Technology, and Electrode Architectures
LocationDuisburg, Germany
Salary ScaleTV-L 13 (Gross €59,324 – €84,319)
Duration36 Months
Start DateJanuary 1, 2027 (or later)
Application DeadlineNovember 25, 2026

Research Area

The project focuses on the direct conversion of bicarbonate to CO in an electrochemical direct air capture (DAC) process. This “energetic shortcut” avoids inefficient thermal steps. The UDE sub-project specifically deals with the development and scaling of electrode architectures, tailored inks, and hierarchical supraparticles adapted for industrial-scale processing, including roll-to-roll coating and laser drying.

Job Description

The selected candidates will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Developing and optimizing ink formulations and hierarchical supraparticles for bicarbonate-based CO2 utilization.
  • Characterizing and processing raw materials into electrodes for bicarbonate-to-CO electrolysis.
  • Establishing standards and routine procedures for powder, dispersion, and coating characterization.
  • Evaluating formulation and process windows using particle, dispersion, and electrochemical data.
  • Transferring lab-scale concepts to roll-to-roll-like coating and laser-drying processes.
  • Assisting in component screening, degradation analysis, and process simulation within the innovation alliance (including partners like Greenlyte, HZB, and FZJ).
  • Pursuing further academic qualifications (Doctorate/PhD).

Eligibility/Qualification

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • An above-average university degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline (minimum 8 semesters of study).
  • A strong interest in electrochemical process development and scalable manufacturing.
  • Previous experience in dispersed systems, slurry/ink formulations, or coating processes is highly advantageous.
  • Ability to conduct independent research with high motivation and reliability.
  • Strong team spirit and the ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary environment.

Benefits

  • A secure job in the public service with fair remuneration (TV-L) and an annual bonus.
  • Opportunity for doctoral qualification with extensive support.
  • Access to modern, well-equipped laboratories and analytical facilities.
  • 30 days of annual leave plus additional days off on December 24 and 31.
  • Family-friendly university culture, including childcare services and flexible working options.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit a digital application including a motivation letter, CV, and relevant attachments. Please specify the reference code 528-26 in your application.
