Study Area: The scholarship positions are available in the fields of Electrocatalysis and Photocatalysis.

Scholarship Description: Electrocatalysis (2 PhD Positions): In partnership with collaborators from several renowned universities and technology providers, the PCS group at the University of Twente offers two Ph.D. positions to develop durable carbon-based electrodes for the electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) into platform chemicals, namely formic acid and formaldehyde. The research also involves developing a catalytic route for selective formic acid reduction to formaldehyde and exploring value-added oxidation reactions, such as the oxidative valorization of biobased acids. One Ph.D. position aims to validate the feasibility of carbon-based electrodes for stable and selective CO2 conversion, including material and reactor design and process parameter optimization. The other position seeks to enhance the understanding of fundamental steps leading to selective cathodic or anodic transformations using advanced spectroscopic techniques. For more details, please contact Marco Atomare (email: rvaitomare@utwente) and Georgios Katsouks (email: gkatsoulls@utwente).

Photocatalysis (1 PhD Position): In collaboration with partners from the ARC CBBC (Advanced Research Center Chemical Building Blocks Consortium) and the Inorganic Membranes group at UT, this project focuses on developing novel concepts for the purification of extensive amounts of contaminated wastewater. The sustainable treatment technology combines membranes with photocatalysts, accommodating a wide range of organic content and large wastewater volumes. Challenges include understanding photocatalyst functionalities in substrate-specific oxidation processes, optimizing the incorporation of photocatalyst particles in membrane structures, and designing the purification process. If you are interested in this position, please contact Guido Mul (email: G.Mul@utwente.nl).
