3 Full-Time Postdoctoral Positions: The Smart Law Hub is seeking applications for three one-year full-time postdoctoral positions in the field of natural language processing, machine learning, and law. The positions are based in Paris, Brussels, and Munich, and the selected fellows will join the interdisciplinary team of the Smart Law Hub. Research on the application of natural language processing and machine learning to legal texts, focusing on cross-jurisdictional AI methods for civil law court decisions. They will help create ways to test how reliable AI systems are. Prof. David Restrepo Amariles and Prof. Gregory Lewkowicz will supervise them.

Designation: Postdoctoral Fellows

Research Area: Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or equivalent

Location: Paris, Brussels, and Munich

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or equivalent
  • Strong programming skills in Python and R
  • Strong background in NLP or machine learning
  • Interest in collaborating with scholars with a legal background
  • Good publication record
  • Strong command of English (knowledge of French, German, or Dutch is a plus)
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance

  • Contribute to cutting-edge projects on the application of natural language processing and machine learning to legal texts
  • Focus on cross-jurisdictional AI methods for civil law court decisions
  • Develop methodologies and metrics to test the trustworthiness of AI systems
  • Conduct research under the supervision of the Principal Investigators of the Smart Law Hub
  • Potential research topics include anonymization methods, argument mining, predictive models, explainability, and transfer learning
