3-Year PhD Position: The Political Science area of the Department of Law at Universitat de Barcelona is offering a 3-year PhD position as part of the EU-funded SUPA (Sustaining Public Administration in Modern Democracies) research project. The selected candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Xavier Fernández-i-Marín and contribute to research at the intersection of comparative public policy, administration, and law, with a strong methodological focus on data science.

Eligibility/Qualification:
The ideal candidate should have:

  • A strong background in Machine Learning with an interest in social and legal issues.
  • Experience in Machine Learning programming.
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP) expertise.
  • Web scraping skills.
  • Proficiency in R/Python and the ability to write extensions.
  • Additional experience in statistical inference, probabilistic programming, and Bayesian inference is a plus.

Job Description:
The selected PhD candidate will play a key role in the Universitat de Barcelona team within the SUPA project, which aims to explore strategies for improving public administration capabilities to manage increasing regulatory burdens. Responsibilities include:

  • Collecting legislative data from multiple European countries.
  • Developing measures for rule growth, administrative burden, and legislative capacity.
  • Evaluating the legislative burden across different contexts.
  • Creating analytical tools for assessing legislative texts and their administrative impact.
  • Participating in consortium activities and contributing to research publications.
