4-Year PhD Scholarship Opportunity in Astrophotonics at Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP)

Designation: PhD Student (m/f/d) in Astrophotonics

Research Area:
The student will undertake research and development of photonic instruments, particularly focusing on spectrograph-on-a-chip technology, including designing, developing, and characterizing arrayed waveguide gratings, fiber- and detector-chip coupling, etc.

Location: Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP), Potsdam, near Berlin, Germany

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • MS/MSc/ME/MTech or equivalent degree in Physics or Astronomy
  • Experience or interest in programming in Python, Photonics CAD (e.g., RSoft, Zemax, Quodoa, EPIPROP, etc.), lithography mask designs, InGaAs, HgCdTe, or eAPD detectors
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficiency in the English language; basic German skills will be an advantage

Job Description:

  • Designing, modeling, fabricating, and characterizing photonic circuits
  • Developing coupling optics and detector electronics for collecting and processing light from photonic chips
  • Supporting the research activities of PhD students and contributing to peer-reviewed publications, patents, and conference papers
