Scholarship Description:
PhD Student Opportunity: Taxonomy, Evolution, and Historical Biogeography in Commelinaceae
Embark on a unique research journey focusing on Commelinaceae, a family of perennial herbs mainly found in the tropics. Contribute to an international phylogenomic study, addressing taxonomy and species recognition for Flora Malesiana. Utilize a combination of morphology and molecular data to explore trait evolution, diversification, and historical biogeography of pantropical taxa. Become a valuable member of the Tropical Botany group at Naturalis and work under the supervision of Dr. Sylvia Mota de Oliveira and Prof. Dr. Rampal Etienne.
Eligibility: Candidates must possess an MSc degree in Biology with a keen interest in plant systematics. Experience in herbarium work, taxonomy, collecting (in the tropics), molecular lab work, and phylogenetic or historical biogeographic analyses is preferred. Excellent English language skills, scientific aptitude, outstanding time management, and the ability to work independently or collaboratively are essential. Teaching experience is advantageous.
