Scholarship Description:
PhD Fellowship in Population Genomics of Primate Speciation
The successful candidate will be involved in designing specific research projects related to the basic question of how new species form in evolutionary biology. The project, part of a larger ERC-funded initiative, integrates surveys of spermatogenesis and genome analysis to identify processes and candidate genes responsible for speciation in primates.
Genomics data from over 300 primate species will be analyzed using new models to understand how different species have evolved. The study will particularly focus on groups prone to hybridization, such as macaque species, baboon species, and gibbon species. The fast-evolving primate X chromosomes, associated with reproductive barriers, will be of specific interest. Results will intersect with single-cell level gene expression studies during spermatogenesis to identify potential functional roles of genes involved in speciation.
Eligibility: Applicants must have at least one year of a Master’s degree in molecular biology, mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, or a related field. An interest in evolutionary biology and/or population genetics is advantageous. The PhD study can be three years (with an MSc) or four years (with one year of an MSc completed at the time of enrollment).
