GREEN Scholarship in the University of South Florida, USA

Postdoctoral Research in Remote Sensing: The Department of Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences (SWES) at the University of Florida (UF) invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the field of Remote Sensing of Soil Moisture Dynamics. This opportunity is a collaborative effort between UF and USDA-NRCS (U.S. Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service) scientists.

Designation: Postdoctoral Research Associate

Research Area: Remote Sensing of Soil Moisture Dynamics

Location: Gainesville, University of Florida, USA

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Ph.D. in Soil Science (soil physics), Hydrology, Civil and Environmental Engineering (Water Resources), Earth/Atmospheric Science, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Remote Sensing, or closely related fields
  • Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent computational skills and programming in Python, MATLAB, or a similar language
  • Prior experience in hydrological modeling, remote sensing, geospatial analysis, machine learning, cloud computing, and analyzing large data sources are advantages

Job Description:

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Remote Sensing of Soil Moisture Dynamics

The successful candidate will contribute to a cooperative project aiming to develop novel physical models that integrate multisource multiscale satellite observations, nationwide NRCS soil survey database, atmospheric forcings, Artificial Intelligence (machine learning and deep learning), and data assimilation techniques. The focus is on estimating and mapping real-time soil moisture dynamics with high spatiotemporal resolution in the contiguous U.S. The participant will be responsible for collecting and analyzing large ground and satellite datasets, developing physics-informed deep learning models, publishing research findings, and assisting in mentoring graduate students.

How to Apply: Interested applicants should submit a cover letter detailing their background and experience, a CV, and contact information for three references to Dr. Ebrahim Babaeian at ebabaeian@ufl.edu or Dr. Sabine Grunwald at sabgru@ufl.edu.
