Summary: The University Medical Center Groningen, Netherlands, is recruiting a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join their dynamic team focused on developing advanced solutions for diagnosing and managing bloodstream infections (BSI). The successful candidate will contribute significantly to the implementation and enhancement of genome-based diagnostics for antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This position is part of the DRAIGON consortium, funded by Horizon Europe, and is based at the University Medical Center Groningen.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, or a related field
  • Experience or strong interest in molecular microbiology and laboratory techniques, including next-generation sequencing
  • Collaborative spirit to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team and with clinical partners
  • Experience in innovative experimental design
  • Strong organizational skills to manage complex workflows and data collection processes
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to present research findings effectively
  • Proficiency in bioinformatics, bacterial and yeast identification, and AMR marker detection is highly desirable
  • Experience in international collaboration or time spent abroad
  • Previous experience in supervising technicians, master students, and PhD students
  • Grant writing experience

Job Description: The Postdoc will:

  • Design and establish patient inclusion criteria and relevant outcome parameters for data collection
  • Conduct comparative analysis of AMR prediction results using short-read and long-read sequencing technologies
  • Develop and standardize a comprehensive end-to-end workflow for profiling pathogens and detecting AMR from pre-enriched cultures
  • Collect and integrate clinical data alongside standard-of-care diagnostics and sequencing data
  • Perform in-depth data analysis to compare the efficacy of sequence-based diagnostics with standard-of-care methods
  • Identify and evaluate critical steps within the diagnostic process affecting time-to-result, on-demand access, and reliable workflow stopping points
  • Supervise the PhD student(s) recruited for this project
  • Collaborate closely with researchers, technicians, and international partners in the field of clinical microbiology and infection control

What We Offer:

  • Four-year Postdoc position with an initial one-year contract, extendable based on performance
