PhD Scholarship in Environmental Microbiology: The Department of Environmental Microbiology at the Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality, and Solid Waste Management (ISWA) at the University of Stuttgart invites applications for a PhD student position. The successful candidate will focus on understanding arsenic mobilization by anaerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria in groundwater systems in Hanoi, Vietnam, addressing a critical issue affecting millions in Southeast Asia.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Solid background in environmental microbiology and molecular ecology.
  • Experience with anaerobic cultivation and molecular biological techniques preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Excellent management and communication skills.
  • Highly motivated and committed to interdisciplinary research.
  • Proficient in English; good computer skills required.

Description: The selected PhD student will investigate the mechanisms controlling arsenic mobilization into groundwater in the Red River Delta, Hanoi, Vietnam. This project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), involves field sampling, molecular biological, and bioinformatic analyses to characterize microbial community composition, genomic potential, and gene expression patterns. The position offers an opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary, international team of environmental microbiologists and microbial ecologists, fostering creativity and innovation in environmental sciences.
