PhD Position in Conservation Science: The Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM) invites applications for a PhD position in Conservation Science as part of the Protrusion Project. PhD Position in Conservation Science: Investigating Mechanisms of Change in Oil Paintings

Eligibility/Qualification: We are seeking a motivated researcher with the following qualifications:
- A completed Master’s degree in Conservation Science, Paintings Conservation, Chemistry, or a related field (candidates nearing completion may apply with a letter from their supervisor indicating expected graduation before September 2024)
- Demonstrated research skills evidenced by an exceptional Master’s thesis and a track record of publishing in high-ranking journals
- Ability to independently conduct experiments exploring material properties, preferably related to art conservation
- Strong cooperative attitude, effective communication skills, and proficiency in English
- Affinity with interdisciplinary research, particularly in art history, conservation practice, and chemistry
Description: The Protrusion Project seeks to unravel the complexities of metal soap protrusions formation in oil paintings, a phenomenon affecting numerous artworks worldwide. The PhD candidate will play a key role in replicating protrusion growth under controlled conditions through meticulous study of oil paintings, thorough literature review, creative paint reconstruction design, and detailed analysis of paint samples. Collaborating with experts in paintings conservation and oil paint chemistry, the candidate will contribute to the development of innovative conservation strategies. The position involves conducting independent research, presenting findings at conferences, and contributing to teaching activities.
