Postdoctoral Researcher in AI-based Forecasting: Join the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research Troposphere Research (IMKTRO) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) as a Postdoc in the ASPIRE project. This project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC), aims to advance subseasonal predictions through AI-based weather forecasting models. You’ll contribute to cutting-edge research in meteorology and data science, exploring the feasibility of adapting AI models for subseasonal time scales.

Postdoctoral Researcher in AI-based Weather Forecasting

Designation: Postdoc (f/m/d)

Research Area: Computer Science, Data Science, Meteorology, Physics

Location: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Scientific university degree and PhD in computer science, data science, meteorology, physics, or related disciplines
  • Experience in implementing and interpreting outputs of deep learning models (e.g., Transformer, Graph Neural Networks)
  • Knowledge of uncertainty quantification, sub-seasonal forecasting, and experience with HPC systems and workflow optimizations are advantageous

Job Description:

  • Implement probabilistic AI-based weather forecasting systems in collaboration with the Junior Research Group “Robust and Efficient AI” at KIT-SCC
  • Fine-tune AI-based weather forecasting models with a focus on the source region of forecast errors
  • Work on locally higher resolution implementation using simulation data generated with ICON, the NWP model of German Weather Service
  • Conduct outreach activities and public relations for ASPIRE, including website management and representation at conferences
  • Develop a user infrastructure for model deployment available to the public
  • Prepare and publish scientific papers
