PostDoc – Quantum Nanomaterials: The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) is seeking a highly motivated Post-doctoral Researcher to join Prof. Jordi Arbiol’s group. This role focuses on atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) characterization of quantum materials and devices.

PostDoc – Quantum Nanomaterials and Hybrid Semiconductor/Superconductor Heterostructures at the Atomic-Scale – ICN2 & ALBA Synchrotron

Designation: Post-doctoral Researcher

Research Area: Advanced Electron Nanoscopy

Location: Bellaterra (Barcelona)

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Ph.D. degree in physical sciences, materials science, nanotechnology, or related fields.
  • Hands-on experience with transmission electron microscopes, including knowledge of electron microscopy principles, concepts, and applications.
  • Advanced sample preparation (FIB) and data analysis skills.

Preferred Knowledge:

  • Experience with advanced transmission/scanning electron microscopes using aberration-corrected optics and direct electron detection systems.
  • Experience with 4D-STEM analysis.
  • Experience with data collection and interpretation of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).
  • Experience with cooling/heating in-situ S/TEM analysis and temperature holders.
  • Basic knowledge of semiconductor and superconductor physics.
  • Experience with semiconductor heterostructures analyses, 2D structures, nanowires.

Personal Competences:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills for interaction with co-workers, management, and support of a wide user community of students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with experience in delivering oral technical presentations to scientific audiences.

Job Description:
The PostDoc will focus on atomic-scale STEM characterization of quantum materials and devices. Responsibilities include:

  • Engaging in focused ion beam (FIB) sample preparation.
  • Utilizing analytical techniques such as energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).
  • Performing advanced STEM-related atomic-scale characterization of semiconductor and hybrid (semiconductor/superconductor) devices for quantum applications (Qubits for quantum computing).
  • Conducting in-situ cooling experiments and data analysis automation, particularly low-loss EELS and valence EELS (VEELS) bandgap mapping in hybrid semi-super heterostructures.
  • Assisting in MSc and PhD students’ supervision and training.

Available Instruments:

  • Thermo Fisher Spectra 300 and Spectra ULTRA with advanced capabilities.
  • Cooling, heating, and biasing sample holders (DENSsolutions ARCTIC, STREAM, and CLIMATE).
  • FEI F20 200 KeV STEM, EELS + EDX.
  • Fully automated FIB Helios 5UX.
  • FEI SEM Quanta and SEM Magellan.
