Doctoral Researcher to Study Dynamics: Aalto University’s Department of Applied Physics is seeking a Doctoral Researcher to join the Soft Matter and Wetting group. The role involves pioneering research on adhesion dynamics between soft materials in wet environments, contributing to the interdisciplinary field of soft matter physics.

Doctoral Researcher to Study Dynamics of Soft Wet Adhesion

Location:
School of Science, Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • A Master’s degree (or soon to be obtained) in Physics, Biophysics, or Engineering.
  • Experience in a programming language such as MATLAB or Python.
  • Experience with experimental setups or developing and testing them is preferred.
  • Willingness to learn new methods and work independently as well as in a team.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English.

Job Description:

  • Implement optics in the force-based microscope.
  • Prepare samples and conduct experiments on adhesion dynamics.
  • Develop advanced image analysis tools.
  • Analyze experimental data and understand interaction forces.
  • Participate in building theoretical models and explaining experimental findings.
  • Collaborate with national and international researchers and present results at conferences.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary and curiosity-driven research within an inclusive and collaborative environment.
  • Commit to training in advanced experimental research and critical thinking.

This is a fully funded 4-year position, initially contracted for 2 years with an additional 2-year extension upon passing a midterm review. The starting salary is approximately 2700 € per month (gross). The contract includes occupational healthcare, with a preferred start date in September/October 2024.
