PhD Position in Carnivore Community Dynamics: The Spatial and Population Ecology of Carnivores (SPEC) Lab at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M – Kingsville, in collaboration with the East Foundation, is pleased to offer a Ph.D. opportunity focusing on bobcat, coyote, and ocelot spatial and foraging ecology within the context of ocelot reintroduction efforts. The research will provide insights into interspecific interactions, dietary niche overlap, and community processes in the presence of reintroduced ocelots.

Eligibility/Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Wildlife, Ecology, Statistics, or related field by Spring 2025
  • Proficiency in R coding language
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis of wildlife population data
  • Fieldwork experience in challenging environmental conditions
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience with live-trapping, wildlife immobilization, and GPS collaring
  • Previous work with camera trap arrays
  • Proficiency in geospatial analysis (R, ArcGIS, QGIS)

Job Description:

The selected candidate will play a key role in trapping, collaring, and monitoring bobcats, coyotes, and potentially ocelots at the research site. Responsibilities include deploying camera traps, analyzing data, and contributing to the overall project goals. The position offers a unique experience in carnivore conservation research in a challenging thornscrub habitat.
