Doctoral Position in Forest Ecology with Focus on Tropical Forests

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Hold a second-cycle (advanced-level) degree in a relevant subject area in the natural sciences
  • Have relevant knowledge of plant biology, ecology, taxonomy, or phylogenetics
  • Possess analytical skills in producing or handling biological data
  • Demonstrate the ability to work individually as well as part of a group
  • Willingness to conduct field work in Brazil
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, due to the international nature of the work

Job Description:
The main task is to conduct the PhD thesis work under supervision, which includes the development of methodological experience, analytical skills, as well as theoretical depth and breadth. Responsibilities also include coordinating the establishment of permanent forest plots and collecting ancillary data such as topographic, edaphic, and climatic variables, plant genetic material, and terrestrial (and potentially drone and airborne) laser scanning for 3D mapping of species and carbon storage quantification. Additionally, the doctoral student will engage in field studies related to forest dynamics, phylogenetics, and remote sensing.
