PhD Position in Parasitology and Pharmacokinetics: Heidelberg University Hospital invites applications for a PhD student to work on a Gates Foundation-funded project aimed at understanding insecticide uptake in the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. The successful candidate will join the Parasitology Unit within the Centre for Infectious Diseases and work alongside a collaborative research consortium.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field
  • Effective English communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Experience working independently and in team settings
  • Problem-solving skills and capacity to design experiments independently after initial training

Job Description:
The PhD candidate will conduct research to determine the pharmacokinetic properties required for effective insecticide uptake in malaria vectors. They will employ a range of techniques, including:

  • Adult bioassays and laser dissection of mosquito cuticles
  • Optimization of leg exposure methods
  • Characterization of cuticular composition in insecticide-resistant mosquito lines
  • Sample preparation for downstream LC-MS and MALDI-imaging

The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Victoria Ingham and collaborate with Dr. David Hong at the University of Liverpool, among other partners in a novel insecticide discovery consortium.
