Research Associate – Machine Learning: One of Australia’s leading research and teaching universities, UNSW, is seeking a talented Research Associate to develop an innovative approach utilizing machine learning to produce high-resolution projections of humid heat waves for ten cities in Southeast Asia and Africa. This position contributes to a larger project between UNSW, ANU, and the University of Oxford and the Minderoo Foundation on lethal humidity and excess mortality predictions.

Eligibility/Qualification:
- Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline such as atmospheric science, physical science, applied mathematics, or computer science
- Specific experience in remote sensing, machine learning, or urban climate
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent scientific research and collaborate as part of a team
- Strong programming skills in Python in a Unix/Linux environment
- Excellent research and publication track record
- High-level analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Job Description:
- Assemble datasets of satellite-derived land surface temperature and urban characteristics for ten cities
- Develop a machine learning approach to produce high-resolution urban land surface temperature
- Develop a model to translate high-resolution land surface temperature into air temperature
- Evaluate the models using historical climate data and produce future projections for the ten cities
- Analyze the statistics of future lethal heat waves
- Contribute to the collegiate life of the Climate Change Research Centre, including supporting PhD supervision, committee membership, and leading workshops
- Contribute to workshops and meetings hosted by the Lethal Humidity Prediction Project
