PhD Scholarship in Tick Research: The Medical University of Vienna invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the field of tick research. The project aims to develop innovative methods for artificial tick feeding to minimize the use of laboratory animals in research. The position is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research of Austria (BMBWF) and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • MSc degree in a related field (e.g., Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences).
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Proficiency in German and English, with strong communication and writing skills.
  • Passion for research with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with statistics is an advantage.
  • Willingness to work with live ticks and conduct fieldwork (tick collection).

Job Description:
The selected candidate will work on a project focusing on artificial tick feeding with the following objectives:

  1. Optimization of the artificial feeding system based on silicone membranes.
  2. Development of an alternative tick food that reduces reliance on animal blood.
  3. Establishment of an infection model to study tick-pathogen interactions using artificial feeding methods.
