PhD/Postdoc Scientist Position, Max-Planck-Institut for Sustainable Materials GmbH, Germany

PhD in Germany, International Max Planck Research School

PhD/Postdoc Scientist Position: The Department Structure and Nano-/Micromechanics of Materials at the Max-Planck-Institut for Sustainable Materials GmbH is seeking a PhD/Postdoc scientist to conduct research on the chemo-mechanics of lithium alloy anodes in solid-state batteries. This role involves understanding the interplay of mechanical stress, defects, and microstructures on charge transfer kinetics during electrochemical reactions.

PhD/Postdoc Scientist Position in Chemo-mechanics of Li Alloy Anode in Solid State Battery

Designation

PhD/Postdoc Scientist

Research Area

Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Chemistry

Location

Max-Planck-Institut for Sustainable Materials GmbH, Germany

Eligibility/Qualification

  • For PhD Students: A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Chemistry, or a closely related field with very good to excellent grades.
  • For Postdocs: A PhD in the aforementioned fields with an excellent publication record.
  • Experience in large- and small-scale mechanical testing of alloys or ceramics.
  • Basic knowledge of electrochemical test protocols is advantageous.
  • Prior research experience in chemo-mechanical investigations related to solid-state batteries is highly desirable.
  • Excellent proficiency in English for effective communication on scientific topics.

Job Description

  • Conduct research to investigate how mechanical stress, defects, and microstructures affect the charge transfer kinetics of lithium alloy anodes and solid electrolytes during electrochemical reactions.
  • Characterize Li alloys using techniques such as nanoindentation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning, and transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM and SEM).
  • Prepare research findings for publication in scientific papers and present results at international scientific conferences.
  • Leverage the department’s cutting-edge experimental infrastructure for research.
