Postdoc in Spain

PhD Studentship in Deep-Sea Macroecology: The Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is offering a fully funded PhD studentship focused on abyssal benthic ecology as part of the MacroHolos PIE Project. This role involves investigating biodiversity and community assembly in abyssal ecosystems, with an emphasis on resilience to climate change and human impact.

Eligibility/Qualification– Master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) in marine biology, deep-sea ecology, or related field
– Average academic grade of 6.5 or higher (on a 0-10 scale)
– Strong interest in statistical analysis and ecological modelling
– Experience in computational analysis (preferably R) and knowledge of deep-sea benthic invertebrate taxonomy is desirable

Description

The successful candidate will engage in the following activities:

  • Detection, processing, and taxonomic classification of abyssal seascape megafauna, primarily holothurians, using high-resolution seabed imagery.
  • Database construction of benthic biodiversity and species traits focused on holothurians.
  • Application of advanced macroecological computing frameworks to explore biodiversity-environment-disturbance relationships.
  • Development of ecosystem-based conservation management strategies and marine policy recommendations.
  • Presenting findings at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.

Successful candidates will join the Functioning and Vulnerability of Marine Ecosystems group at ICM-CSIC and can expect opportunities for fieldwork, collaboration with research institutes, and potential involvement with marine conservation stakeholders.
