Eligibility/Qualification

  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Strong command of both written and spoken English.
  • Skills in (non-linear) mechanical modeling, system dynamics, tribology, and mechanical design.
  • Practical experience in laboratory environments, including setting up experiments and analyzing data.
  • A high degree of responsibility and independence, and ability to collaborate with peers.

Description

This PhD research focuses on designing and analyzing kinematic couplings, crucial for achieving high-precision and deterministic alignment between components without reliance on actuators or sensors. Candidates will investigate fundamental challenges such as friction, thermal drift, and load response, contributing to innovations in optics, metrology, semiconductor manufacturing, and medical technology.

Participants will utilize analytical modeling, finite element simulations, and experimental validation to develop novel coupling designs, ultimately advancing passive alignment technologies and their integration into next-generation precision systems.

As a member of the Precision Engineering Laboratory, candidates will work in a collaborative environment, with opportunities to present findings at international conferences and contribute to advancements in the Dutch precision engineering industry.
