PhD Position in Microbiome Biology: The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is inviting applications for a PhD Position in the Microbiome Biology group. The research will focus on leveraging metaproteome management in relation to One Health, under the project METAMIC 3.

Eligibility/Qualification
- Master’s, Diploma, or equivalent degree in environmental sciences, (eco)toxicalogy, bioanalysis, or related areas
- Experience in analytical chemistry
- Skills in IT and modeling with a focus on toxicity models
- Proficiency in scientific English (written and spoken)
- Willingness to work in interdisciplinary teams and spend time abroad
Essential Eligibility Criteria:
- Must hold a relevant master’s degree or equivalent by the start date of the doctoral program
- Must not already possess a doctoral degree (Ph.D.)
- Must comply with international mobility conditions—having resided or carried out main activities in Germany for no more than 12 months in the past 3 years
Description
The successful candidate will:
- Work with mass spectrometers to extract whole proteomes from microbial cultures and human matrices.
- Conduct in vitro bioreactor studies using a simplified human gut microbiome model (SIHUMIx).
- Measure the abundance, composition, and molecular functions of soluble and particle-bound bacteria using metaproteomics.
- Present research outcomes at international conferences and prepare publications for peer-reviewed journals.
