Scientist Position in Biophotovoltaics: The Department of Microbial Biotechnology at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is seeking a highly-motivated scientist (f/m/x) for a groundbreaking research project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. This project focuses on developing a novel photo-biohybrid concept for ammonia production through the coupling of a natural oxygenic photosystem and the enzyme nitrogenase.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • PhD in: Bioorganic chemistry, molecular biotechnology, biochemical engineering, or related areas.
  • Essential Experience:
  • Redox hydrogel design, characterization, and interface with living systems.
  • Microscopy and spectroscopy techniques.
  • Bonus Experience:
  • Pure microbial culture.
  • Chemical modification using click chemistry.
  • Skills:
  • Excellent communication and team-working abilities.
  • High self-motivation and initiative.
  • Proficient in English (speaking and writing).

Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Developing redox hydrogel-cyanobacteria photobioanodes.
  • Applying microscopy-based analytics to characterize the bio-hydrogel interface and electron transfer kinetics.
  • Engineering the bio-hydrogel interface using techniques like click chemistry to enhance electron transfer kinetics.
  • Developing a prototype system that combines photobioanode and enzymatic cathode to demonstrate the photobioammonium production concept.
  • Communicating closely with project partners and driving project progress.
  • Publishing in reputable journals and presenting at leading scientific conferences.
