PhD Position in Magnetic Imaging: The Department of Earth Sciences at Utrecht University invites applications for a PhD position aimed at exploring nanoscale rock magnetism and magnetic imaging. Research Area

This research focuses on the empirical characterization of individual magnetic particles and aims to uncover crucial geomagnetic field information from nanoscale vortex-state particles during significant Earth historical events.

Location

The position is based at the Paleomagnetic Laboratory Fort Hoofddijk, Utrecht University, Netherlands.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Completed MSc degree in Earth Sciences or a related field by September 1, 2026
  • Background in paleomagnetism, mineralogy, and petrography is highly valued
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
  • Experience or interest in advanced laboratory techniques, scientific programming (e.g., Python), and collaboration within multidisciplinary teams is preferred.

Description

The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct nanoscale magnetic measurements using Quantum Scanning Microscopy and Quantum Diamond Microscopy.
  • Characterize particle geometry using slice-and-view FIB-SEM analysis.
  • Investigate mineralogical and chemical properties through electron microscopy.
  • Collaborate closely with a postdoctoral researcher on micromagnetic simulations.
  • Present findings at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Initially, a 1-year contract will be extended to a total of four years upon successful assessment.

Salary and Benefits

  • Gross monthly salary between €3,059 and €3,881 (full-time employment).
  • Additional benefits include holiday pay, a year-end bonus, and a pension scheme.
