PhD / MASc Scholarships: The University of Guelph in Canada is inviting applications for funded PhD and MASc positions in Autonomous Drone Systems. The research focuses on developing AI-powered UAV technologies for agricultural applications, combining robotics, artificial intelligence, and drone system integration. Two positions are available: Computer Vision / AI and UAV Control & System Integration. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.

Eligibility / Qualification

Position 1 – Computer Vision / AI
Applicants should have:

  • Background in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
  • Experience in computer vision, deep learning, or object detection
  • Programming experience with Python, C++, and ROS

Position 2 – UAV Control & System Integration
Applicants should have:

  • Background in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related disciplines
  • Experience in drone flight control, robotics, or autonomous systems
  • Experience with ROS and UAV platforms such as PX4, ArduPilot, or similar

General Requirements

  • Minimum GPA: 85% (or equivalent)
  • At least one first-authored journal or conference paper or an equivalent patent
  • Exceptional MASc applicants with closely related experience may also be considered

Job Description

Selected candidates will work on a funded research project focused on autonomous drone-based systems for agriculture. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing AI and computer vision algorithms for drone perception
  • Designing autonomous navigation and control systems for UAVs
  • Integrating robotics, sensing technologies, and drone platforms
  • Conducting experiments, simulations, and field testing for agricultural applications
  • Publishing research findings in high-impact journals and conferences
