PhD Position in Multi-scale Modelling, University of Groningen, Netherlands

Postdoctoral Position - 2019 in Netherlands, Delft University of Technology

Summary

The University of Groningen is offering a 4-year PhD position focused on the multi-scale modelling of precipitate strengthening in green steel compositions. This project aims to enhance the understanding of micro-scale and atomic-scale processes and their interactions with dislocation networks in order to mitigate the impacts of tramp elements in recycled steel.

Research Area

The project investigates the interactions of dislocations and precipitates in multi-component alloy systems, particularly focusing on how impurities from recycled materials affect steel quality through atomistic modelling and microscale simulations.

Location

University of Groningen, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Netherlands.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Educational Background:
  • MSc degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Civil (Structural) Engineering, or a related field.
  • Skills Required:
  • Strong background in solid mechanics.
  • Experience with finite element implementation, coding, discrete dislocation mechanics, and atomistic modelling (molecular dynamics) is advantageous.

Job Description

The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Francesco Maresca, focusing on developing a multi-scale framework to predict precipitate strengthening. The research will tackle challenges posed by tramp elements in steel scrap, ultimately contributing to enhanced properties for new green steel production methodologies.
