Postdoctoral Fellowship in Analytical Chemistry and Biogeochemistry, Umeå University, Sweden

Postdoctoral Position 2019 in Uppsala University, Sweden

Summary

Umeå University invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship focused on the development of analytical methods for nanoparticulate structures of trace metals, particularly focusing on nanoparticulate mercury sulfide (HgS(np)). This opportunity is part of the Chemical Department’s initiatives aimed at addressing significant environmental challenges.

  • Environmental Science

Eligibility/Qualification

RequirementDetails
DegreePh.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Biogeochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, or a related field.
Experience– Advanced experimental research experience.
– Preferred: Method development in chromatography-mass spectrometry and biogeochemical studies of nanoparticulate trace metals.
LanguageProficient in English (oral and written).
Recent GraduatesApplicants who earned their Ph.D. within the last three years are preferred, with exceptions for specific circumstances (e.g., illness, parental leave).

Job Description

The postdoctoral researcher will develop sophisticated analytical methods to quantify and characterize nanoparticulate structures of trace metals. The project will utilize advanced techniques including:

  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS)
  • Single-Particle ICPMS (sp-ICPMS)
  • Size-Exclusion Chromatography ICPMS (SEC-ICPMS)

Additionally, nanoparticle characterization will be performed using:

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX)
  • X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)
  • Vibrational Spectroscopy

The project will study the natural formation of HgS(np) in pore waters from sediments and soils, analyzing their role in mercury cycling in the environment.

How to Apply

Interested candidates must submit an application in English as a single PDF file including:

  • CV
  • Personal statement outlining research interests, qualifications, and motivation (max. 2000 characters including spaces)
  • Publication list (including links/DOIs)
  • Verified copy of Ph.D. diploma or documentation of expected completion date
  • Copies of additional diplomas and academic certificates
  • Contact details of two references

Applications should be submitted through Umeå University’s e-recruitment system, Varbi.
