PhD Position: Light-Driven CO2 Capture and Molecular Systems, ETH Zurich, Switzerland

Postdoc Position at University of Zurich Switzerland

The Electrochemical Energy Systems Laboratory at ETH Zurich is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to conduct research on light-driven CO2 capture. This position focuses on developing molecular systems that harness light to control chemical equilibria and enable energy-efficient carbon capture.

PhD Position: Light-Driven CO2 Capture and Molecular Systems

Position Overview

CategoryDetails
DesignationPhD Student
LocationZurich, Switzerland
Workload100%, Fixed-term
Research AreaMolecular Systems, Physical Chemistry, Photochemistry, CO2 Capture
Starting DateJuly 15, 2026 (or later by agreement)

Research Area & Project Background

Conventional CO2 capture technologies are currently very energy-intensive. This project explores an alternative approach using photoresponsive molecular switches (photoacids). The research aims to understand how these switches influence proton transfer and chemical equilibria to control CO2 capture and release, ultimately uncovering fundamental principles for next-generation, energy-efficient technologies.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Candidates must hold (or be close to completing) a Masterโ€™s degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Chemistry / Physical Chemistry / Organic Chemistry
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Materials Science

Advantageous, but not required, experience includes:

  • Photochemistry or Physical chemistry
  • Organic, polymer, or supramolecular chemistry
  • CO2 capture or reaction/process engineering
  • Spectroscopic characterization techniques

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and investigate molecular systems for light-driven CO2 capture.
  • Study photoinduced proton-transfer processes and their impact on capture chemistry.
  • Analyze experimental data to develop a deep, mechanistic understanding.
  • Collaborate with internal and international research teams.
  • Present and publish findings in leading scientific journals and at international conferences.
