Summary

The High Energy Physics Institute in Barcelona (IFAE) is offering a 4-year PhD student position in its Gamma-ray group. The selected candidate will contribute to cutting-edge hardware developments for future space gamma-ray observatories, conduct scientific assessments for next-generation space missions, and perform high-impact data analysis using early scientific data from the CTA LSTs and MAGIC observatories.

Astroparticle Physics, Gamma-Ray Astronomy, Instrumentation R&D for Space Missions, and Scientific Data Analysis.

High Energy Physics Institute in Barcelona (IFAE), Barcelona, Spain.  

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Education: Master’s degree in Physics (or equivalent) by the start date, providing direct access to the PhD program in Physics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.  
  • Language: A good command of spoken and written English.  
  • Desirable Skills: Experience with scientific programming (Python, C++, or similar) and data analysis tools.  
  • Assets: Previous experience with scientific instrumentation and/or scientific/technical contributions in gamma-ray astronomy or space missions.  

Job Description

  • Contribute to the design, testing, and evaluation of instrumentation for future gamma-ray space missions.  
  • Perform scientific analyses of data from gamma-ray observatories (MAGIC and/or CTA-LST) to study astrophysical sources and fundamental physics.  
  • Develop simulation, reconstruction, and analysis tools to support instrumentation studies and data analysis.  
  • Actively participate in international scientific collaborations, present results, and contribute to scientific publications.  
  • Conduct original research leading to the completion of a PhD thesis in Gamma-Ray Astronomy.
