Research Areas

Advanced technology and method development in STEM fields (data science, imaging, structural biology, and biotechnology) for life science research infrastructures.

Projects must align with EMBL’s core research areas—such as genomics, structural biology, imaging, cell/tissue biology, environmental research, or translational applications—while developing services for the broader life science community. Eligible fields include:

  • Data and Computational Science: Bioinformatics, AI/ML, computational modelling, software engineering, data management, data science.
  • Imaging and Optical Engineering: Microscopy, optical engineering, detector development, imaging & image analysis, X-ray optics.
  • Structural Biology and Mechanical Engineering: Automation, high-precision mechanics, microfluidics, robotics, X-ray crystallography.
  • Biotechnology: (Bio)chemical engineering, chemistry/chemical biology, omics technologies.

Job Description

As an ARISE2 Fellow, your main duties will include:

  • Developing a method or technology within EMBL’s areas of expertise with high potential for broader service application.
  • Participating in structured training covering service provision, staff and project management, innovation, science policy, FAIR data principles, and AI.
  • Building networks through secondment and job shadowing at EMBL sites and partner organizations.

Eligibility & Qualification

  • Degree: Ph.D. in a relevant STEM discipline by the application deadline (September 30, 2026). Candidates who have defended their thesis but have not yet been formally awarded the degree are eligible.
  • STEM Background: A university degree in a relevant STEM field.
  • Technical Experience: Practical experience in technology development (from academia and/or industry) relevant to participating EMBL research groups.
  • Research Potential: Demonstrated research output (e.g., publications, software tools, datasets, patents, or technical documentation).
  • Skills: Excellent communication skills in English, high organizational ability, and capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively.
