The Advanced Manufacturing Lab at Carleton University is inviting applications from highly motivated students for 2 funded PhD positions (1 international and 1 domestic) and 1 funded MASc position (domestic students only).

The positions will begin in Fall 2026/Winter 2027 and will focus on advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, and the development of advanced metallic materials.

✅ Eligibility / Qualification

Applicants should have:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials & Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field.
  • A strong academic background in:
    • Materials
    • Manufacturing
    • Metallurgy
    • Mechanics
    • Related engineering disciplines
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interest in experimental research and materials characterization.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a collaborative research environment.
  • Previous experience in additive manufacturing, materials characterization, metallurgy, or mechanical testing will be considered an asset.

🧪 Job / Research Description

Selected students will work on funded research projects involving the manufacturing and characterization of advanced metallic materials.

Potential research activities include:

  • Developing and optimizing metal additive manufacturing processes.
  • Investigating relationships between manufacturing parameters and material properties.
  • Controlling microstructure and phase transformations.
  • Developing nanoparticle-reinforced metallic materials.
  • Conducting experimental research and advanced materials characterization.
  • Performing mechanical testing and analyzing experimental results.
  • Collaborating with researchers in an interdisciplinary advanced manufacturing environment.
