Summary
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Turku invites applications for two fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher positions within the Memristor and Neuromorphic Computing Research Group (Wihuri Physical Laboratory). Eligibility & Qualifications
Common Requirements
- A completed Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) in a relevant field by the end of the application period.
- Proven ability to carry out independent scientific research and required teaching skills.
- High motivation, strong experimental rigor, and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong written and spoken English communication skills.
Track-Specific Requirements
Track A: Crossbar Fabrication & Reliability
- Essential:
- Ph.D. in Materials Physics, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or related field.
- Strong hands-on experience in thin-film patterning and microfabrication.
- Hands-on experience with techniques such as maskless lithography, atomic layer deposition (ALD), reactive-ion etching (RIE), and e-beam evaporation.
- Characterization experience with AFM, SEM, and electrical/resistivity measurements.
- Desirable:
- Cleanroom experience, electron-beam lithography (EBL), and/or pulsed laser deposition (PLD).
- Experience with memristors, crossbar arrays, reliability testing, and Python data automation.
Track B: Perovskite Nanomaterials for Artificial Synapses
- Essential:
- Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, Perovskites, Semiconductor Nanomaterials, or related field.
- Strong hands-on experience with colloidal synthesis of perovskites, quantum dots, or nanoplatelets.
- Expertise in ligand exchange, surface passivation, and stability engineering.
- Structural/materials characterization experience (XRD, SEM, TEM, NMR) and photophysical characterization (UV-vis, PL, TRPL).
- Desirable:
- Synthesis of 2D/low-dimensional perovskites and thin-film processing.
- Experience with device integration (memristors, LEDs, photodetectors) and transport/defect mechanisms.
- Willingness to complete ~3 months of international research mobility (e.g., Aalto University, AMOLF).
Job Description & Responsibilities
Track A: Memristor Crossbar Fabrication & Reliability (OCEANAut Project)
- Plan and perform experimental micro- and nanofabrication workflows for memristor crossbars.
- Optimize, document, and scale manufacturing processes for device yield and reliability.
- Perform structural, morphological, and electrical characterization of switching devices.
- Share equipment maintenance responsibilities and contribute to student supervision (M.Sc./Ph.D.).
- Disseminate findings through high-impact journal publications and conference presentations.
Track B: Perovskite Nanomaterials for Memristive Devices (RCF Project)
- Establish and operate synthesis pipelines for perovskite quantum dots and semiconductor nanocrystals.
- Develop surface-passivation and ligand-engineering methods to control defects and stability.
- Formulate thin films and integrate promising nanomaterials into artificial synapse devices.
- Correlate material properties with memristive switching mechanisms.
- Publish scientific findings, present at conferences, and participate in project reporting.
