Research Area
This doctoral research project spans Medical Artificial Intelligence, Agentic AI, Multimodal Machine Learning, and Computational Oncology. The primary focus is the development and translation of intelligent decision-support models integrating longitudinal health data, radiology, and pathology to optimize prostate cancer diagnosis and individualized therapy.
Scholarship & Position Description
The PhD position is embedded within the PROMETHEUS project (PROstate cancer Multimodal Explainable Transferable Holistic Expert for Universal Stratification). PROMETHEUS brings together six premier European institutions to design an AI "super-agent" capable of integrating MRI, PSMA PET/CT imaging, histopathology, and longitudinal electronic health records.
Key Research Objectives
- Predictive Diagnosis: Identifying whether a patient requires a prostate biopsy and assessing the likelihood of clinically aggressive cancer.
- Personalized Treatment Selection: Simulating disease trajectories under active surveillance, surgery, or multimodal oncological therapies.
- Evidence-Based Decision Support: Generating transparent, explainable AI recommendations paired with uncertainty estimations conforming to clinical guidelines.
Research Environment
The successful candidate will work between two world-renowned research units at Radboudumc:
- DIAG (Diagnostic Image Analysis Group): A pioneering research cluster of over 70 scientists focused on deep learning, radiology, and pathology AI innovations.
- MAGIC (Minimally Invasive Image-Guided Intervention Center): Leaders in translating image-guided technologies for prostate diagnosis and intervention into direct clinical care.
- Access to the world's largest curated prostate MRI cohort (>22,000 examinations across 22 countries) and established consortia behind landmark studies such as PI-CAI and PANORAMA (published in The Lancet Oncology).

Eligibility and Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following entry criteria:
- Academic Background: An MSc degree (or equivalent) in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering, Technical Medicine, Medicine, or a related quantitative field.
- Technical Skills: Strong programming proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks (PyTorch).
- Methodological Knowledge: Demonstrated interest or experience in multimodal learning, agentic AI architectures, longitudinal modeling, or uncertainty quantification.
- Interdisciplinary Interest: Genuine enthusiasm for oncology research and translating computational algorithms into clinical impact.
