Research Area & Project Description

Hydrogen is a critical energy carrier in achieving zero-emission goals; however, transporting, storing, and utilizing hydrogen presents severe technical challenges regarding material integrity. The primary focus of this PhD project includes:

  • Investigating the mechanisms of hydrogen embrittlement in metallic materials and alloys.
  • Conducting mechanical testing, fatigue evaluation, and fracture mechanics under simulated hydrogen environments.
  • Developing predictive life assessment models and structural integrity frameworks for hydrogen infrastructure.
  • Integrating experimental observations with advanced numerical modeling and microstructural characterization techniques.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Applicants must meet the formal requirements for admission to the doctoral program at NTNU:

  • Academic Background: A Master’s degree (or equivalent 120 ECTS graduate program) in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field with strong academic results.
  • Knowledge & Skills: Solid understanding of fracture mechanics, materials degradation, testing methodology, and constitutive modeling.
  • Language Proficiency: Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Personal Qualities: Strong analytical skills, self-motivation, ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary international team.
