Research Area & Summary
This position resides in the Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies Group within the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate at ORNL. The research group focuses on high-impact R&D dedicated to developing high-performance, lower-cost, and domestically sourced composite manufacturing technologies.
The successful candidate will advance composites manufacturing across scales (from benchtop to pilot-scale) utilizing both traditional and advanced techniques, including additive manufacturing, injection molding, and compression molding. In addition, the researcher will leverage world-class characterization facilities to evaluate, understand, and refine material formulations.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform composite manufacturing using methods such as compression molding, injection molding, and additive manufacturing.
- Operate advanced analytical and characterization instruments, including DSC, TGA, DMA, TMA, FTIR, XRD, twin-screw extruders, rheometers, and electron/optical microscopy.
- Design, execute, and troubleshoot experimental workflows to characterize new and innovative materials for diverse mechanical, physical, and thermal properties.
- Analyze data and disseminate research findings by authoring and publishing multiple high-impact peer-reviewed journal articles per year.
- Collaborate actively with multidisciplinary research teams, project sponsors, industry stakeholders, and academic partners.
- Maintain rigorous adherence to environment, safety, health, and quality (ESH&Q) standards in all laboratory activities.
Eligibility & Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Education: Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial/Systems Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Recency of Degree: Ph.D. must have been completed within the past five (5) years prior to application, with all degree requirements fulfilled before the appointment start date.
- Demonstrated capability to conduct safe, high-quality experimental work in a multidisciplinary laboratory environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, suitable for presenting research to an international scientific audience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Self-motivated researcher capable of working independently and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Proven ability to manage multiple research priorities effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Special Requirements:
- Post-offer pre-hire physical examination is required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential via a Tier 1 background investigation in accordance with DOE security requirements.
