Research Area & Project Focus
New Approach Methodologies (NAM technologies), particularly organoids and microphysiological systems (MPS) or organ-on-chip platforms, are redefining the life sciences by overcoming the limitations of conventional animal models. The PhD fellow will be integrated into an interdisciplinary team supervised by Professor Stefan Krauss and Dr. Aleksandra Aizenshtadt.
Key research tasks include:
- Developing a robust, microfluidic platform for in-depth analysis of liver–immune cell interactions.
- Investigating liver-immune cross-talk, resolution of inflammation, and restoration of tissue homeostasis.
- Combining stem cell biology, patient-derived materials, tissue engineering, advanced analytics, and microfluidics to build predictive human biomedical models.
Eligibility & Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following educational and technical requirements:
- Academic Background: Master’s degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related discipline.
- Laboratory Experience: A minimum of two years of relevant post-graduate, hands-on laboratory experience.
- Cell Culture Expertise: Documented experience with advanced human cell culture, including 3D models, pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and organ-on-chip systems.
- Molecular Techniques: Proficiency in standard molecular and cell biology methods (RT-qPCR, ELISA, immunocytochemistry, and Western blotting).
- Imaging Skills: Experience with sample preparation, confocal microscopy, and high-resolution image analysis.
- Desirable Assets: Hands-on experience with primary human tissues (especially liver tissue), single-cell/single-nucleus RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq/snRNA-seq) library preparation, and transcriptomic data analysis pipelines.
- Language: Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
