Eligibility/Qualification

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor of Arts or Science (B.A. or B.S.) degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university prior to enrollment. Typical preparation includes courses in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics.
• Research experience, including undergraduate research internships, summer programs, Master’s thesis research, or medical research clerkships. Applicants should demonstrate a thorough understanding of a research career, a passion for research, and exceptional talent/aptitude for science.
• Overall academic excellence (no specific GPA threshold, but a solid academic record is expected).
• Three letters of recommendation from faculty members, ideally those who know the applicant’s academic work or supervised research.
• Proof of English proficiency for international applicants (see details below).
• Transcript evaluation for academic institutions outside the United States (see details below).
• High competence in critical thinking, writing, and public speaking.

Before an offer of admission, international applicants must provide proof of English proficiency via one of the following methods:

• Official scores from an English proficiency standardized test (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo) sent directly from the testing agency. Scores must be less than two years old.

A signed letter from the Registrar’s Office may be required if the transcript does not explicitly state English as the primary language of instruction (online degrees not accepted for verification).
• English proficiency waiver: May be granted if the applicant holds a passport from an English-speaking country (as per The World Factbook) OR is currently enrolled in/recently graduated from a baccalaureate program (or higher) at an accredited U.S. or English-primary international institution, AND demonstrates suitable English proficiency during the admissions interview. Waivers are not automatic.

Transcript Evaluation (International Applicants Only):

All transcripts from academic institutions outside of the United States must be accompanied by an official course-by-course evaluation, including U.S. GPA conversion, from World Education Services (WES), International Credential Evaluators, or another agency approved by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). The evaluation is at the applicant’s expense. The original evaluated document and an English translation (if applicable) must be included.

Scholarship Description

The Van Andel Institute Graduate School (VAI) Ph.D. program in Molecular and Cellular Biology is designed to train future biomedical research leaders. The curriculum emphasizes problem-based learning and early, extensive lab experience, with students completing three lab rotations and selecting a thesis lab by the end of their first year. This approach maximizes research and mentorship time. The program also offers M.D./Ph.D. Dual-Degree Programs in partnership with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine. The Graduate School is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and provides a collaborative environment with a diverse student body.
