Summary
The University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG), a leading institution combining the Medical Faculty of Georg-August University and the University Hospital, is offering a PhD position within the Institute of Cellular Biochemistry. This scholarship is for a highly motivated PhD student to join the research group “Structure and Function of Molecular Machines” led by Prof. Dr. Hauke Hillen. The research focuses on the molecular and structural biology of organellar gene expression, particularly in mitochondria and chloroplasts, and systems employed by viruses.

Research Area
The research group focuses on understanding the mechanisms of eukaryotic gene expression systems, specifically those found in organelles (mitochondria and chloroplasts) or employed by viruses. This involves combining structural biology (single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, X-Ray crystallography, cryo-electron tomography) with biochemical, biophysical, and cell biological approaches.
Your Tasks:
- Combine cutting-edge structural biology, protein- and RNA biochemistry, as well as cellular methods to dissect mitochondrial molecular biology from the atomic to the organellar scale.
- Drive your own research project in a collaborative team with close mentoring and supervision.
- Present and communicate research results at national and international scientific meetings.
- Gain experience in mentoring and teaching of students.
Location
Göttingen, Germany (University Medical Center Göttingen and Max-Planck-Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences)
Eligibility/Qualifications
Your Qualifications:
- Applicants should hold an M.Sc. or equivalent degree in biochemistry or a related discipline.
- Previous experience in structural biology, protein- or RNA biochemistry is advantageous.
- Fluent English language skills (written and spoken) are required.
Scholarship Description
This PhD scholarship offers an opportunity to engage in high-impact research within a small, international, and diverse research group. The UMG provides access to state-of-the-art instrumentation for cryo-EM (including two 300 kV Titan Krios TEMs, a 200 kV Glacios TEM, and two Aquilos 2 FIB-SEMs, plus correlative microscopy devices), X-Ray crystallography, and various modern biophysical techniques. Scholars will receive hands-on training in the latest molecular and structural biology methods and benefit from a structured cross-institutional graduate program offering extensive mentoring and career support.
