Summary
The Central England NERC Training Alliance (CENTA) offers fully-funded PhD studentships in Earth and Environmental Sciences through two main pathways: project-based studentships and the CENTA Science Opportunity Scholarships (CSOS). These opportunities are designed to support doctoral research training within a consortium of research-intensive universities and institutes, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
CENTA is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, recognizing diverse educational pathways and personal circumstances that may affect a candidate’s opportunity to demonstrate their full potential. Such circumstances, if disclosed, will be considered during the application process.

Scholarship Description
Project-based Studentships:
These studentships are tied to specific, advertised research projects within the CENTA consortium. Applicants apply directly to a listed project at a host institution. Successful candidates will undertake PhD research aligned with the chosen project.
CENTA Science Opportunity Scholarships (CSOS):
CSOS offers fully-funded PhD studentships aimed at addressing historical imbalances by supporting applicants from ethnic minority backgrounds. This scheme is not attached to specific projects; instead, successful applicants will have the opportunity to design their own PhD project in collaboration with a supervisor from the CENTA network who works in their area of interest, within the NERC funding remit.
