Research Focus & Job Description
As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will guide and lead research activities on quantum approaches to fluid dynamics, working with substantial scientific independence alongside project teams from both ETH Zurich and IBM.
Key responsibilities include:
- Investigating Lattice Boltzmann algorithms suitable for quantum hardware, including linearisation methods such as Kolmogorov, Koopman, and Carleman approaches.
- Exploring quantum algorithmic strategies to solve fluid problems, including sparse Hamiltonian methods, block encoding, and Quantum Linear Systems Algorithms (QLSAs).
- Developing novel linearisation, integration, and algorithmic approaches tailored for LBM.
- Designing hybrid classical–quantum approaches (e.g., combining LBM for near-wall treatment with Navier–Stokes formulations for core/internal flows).
- Comparing LBM formulations with Navier–Stokes alternatives concerning quantum resource overhead, scalability, numerical stability, and industrial applicability.
- Evaluating and quantifying the potential for quantum advantage in high Reynolds number fluid problems.
- Developing theoretical frameworks, computational evidence, and proof-of-concept demonstrations involving complex geometry and non-trivial boundary conditions.
- Engaging in regular scientific exchanges and presentations (bi-weekly) with ETH and IBM teams.
- Publishing findings in high-impact scientific journals and presenting at major international conferences.
Eligibility and Qualifications
Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong scientific capabilities and cross-disciplinary enthusiasm. Candidates should meet the following criteria:
- Education: A PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Quantum Computing, or a closely related discipline.
- Core Expertise: Strong theoretical or practical background in at least one key domain: computational fluid dynamics, quantum physics, quantum algorithms, or quantum computing.
- Technical Skills: Proven experience in developing, implementing, and analysing numerical methods; familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC), scientific programming, or quantum computing software frameworks.
- Research Independence: Demonstrated ability to independently address complex technical questions and propose innovative solutions.
- Communication: Excellent command of spoken and written English with strong collaboration skills across interdisciplinary teams.
Note: Candidates whose background does not encompass all project facets but who possess deep expertise in one core domain and are keen to bridge disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply.
