Research Area

This PhD focuses on the intersection of battery science, nano‑analytics and data science. Core topics include:

  • Focused Ion Beam — Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (FIB‑SIMS)
  • Cryogenic sample preparation and correlative microscopy
  • Isotopic imaging and lithium tracing at the nanoscale
  • Automated acquisition and high‑throughput data‑processing workflows
  • Structure‑property relationships in silicon‑based Li‑ion battery electrodes and the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI)

Location

Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), Belvaux / Esch‑sur‑Alzette, Luxembourg. PhD registration will be with the University of Luxembourg (Belval campus).

Eligibility / Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Interest and prior experience with advanced scientific instrumentation; hands‑on work with microscopy or surface analysis is an advantage.
  • Basic programming skills (e.g. Python) and interest in developing automated acquisition/data‑analysis workflows are an asset.
  • Self‑motivated, team player, and able to work in a multidisciplinary and international environment.
  • Fluency in English (C1 level reading, writing and speaking required for the position). For university enrolment, a B2 English certificate is mandatory unless the Master degree was fully taught in English (see University of Luxembourg accepted certificates).
  • Master diploma must be recognized in Luxembourg; successful candidates must self‑register at the University of Luxembourg and pay applicable enrolment fees (approx. €400/semester as of April 2026).

Scholarship Description

This funded doctoral position offers a competitive gross salary, a stimulating research environment and access to state‑of‑the‑art infrastructures. The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and optimise cryogenic and protective sample preparation, lift‑out strategies and automated FIB‑SIMS acquisition to preserve porous electrode structure and delicate SEI layers.
  • Create high‑resolution 2D and 3D isotopic maps of lithium and SEI‑related species, enabling quantitative analysis of lithium distribution and transport at the nanoscale.
  • Build automated data‑processing pipelines to generate large, statistically representative datasets that can inform predictive modelling of battery behaviour.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across battery science, nano‑analytics, instrumentation, software and data science.
  • Publish results in peer‑reviewed journals and present at international conferences.

LIST provides an inclusive, international workplace with generous leave, social benefits, professional development, flexible working hours and modern laboratory facilities.
