Postdoctoral Researcher in Human Stem Cell Biology – Karolinska Institutet, Sweden

Study in Sweden

Summary

Karolinska Institutet is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Rydén and Mejhert laboratory. This multidisciplinary research group investigates how alterations in human white adipocyte function contribute to cardiometabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and atherosclerosis. The project focuses on uncovering how distinct human adipose stem and progenitor cell (ASPC) populations determine cell fate and tissue organization.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Human Stem Cell Biology and Adipose Tissue Development – Karolinska Institutet

DesignationPostdoctoral Researcher
Research AreaHuman Stem Cell Biology and Adipose Tissue Development
LocationSolna, Stockholm, Sweden
Employment TypeFull-time, Temporary position
Reference NumberSTÖD 2-4305/2026

Research Area

The research focuses on the fundamental mechanisms of human adipose tissue development. By combining human cell models with transplantation, lineage tracing, and single-cell and spatial transcriptomic approaches, the project aims to determine how different ASPC identities influence cell fate and tissue development in the context of metabolic disease.

Job Description

The successful candidate will take a leading role in experimental design, method development, data generation, and interpretation. Key responsibilities include:

  • Investigating lineage relationships between progenitor populations and their contributions to tissue formation.
  • Identifying mechanisms that enable transplanted cells to establish adipose tissue in vivo.
  • Performing cell culture, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), and genetic manipulation (including CRISPR-based approaches).
  • Conducting lineage tracing, in vivo transplantation, and tissue imaging.
  • Utilizing single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomic profiling in collaboration with bioinformaticians.
  • Validating findings from spatial transcriptomics using immunostaining and microscopy.

Eligibility/Qualification

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a Swedish PhD in experimental cell biology, stem cell biology, developmental biology, or a related field.
  • PhD completion within the last three years is considered an advantage.
  • Essential hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture and molecular techniques.
  • Highly valued experience in flow cytometry, cell sorting, and mouse models (particularly cell transplantation or tissue regeneration).
  • Experience with genetic manipulation, stable cell labeling, or lineage tracing is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an international research environment.

How to Apply

The application must be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system. Your application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete resumé, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, and academic distinctions.
  • A complete list of publications.
  • A summary of current work (maximum one page).
