Summary
The University of Bern is offering a 100% fixed-term PhD position within the Fundamental Neutron and Precision Physics Group. The successful candidate will work on the n2EDM experimental program, focusing on data analysis, simulations, and precision measurements at the Albert Einstein Center for Fundamental Physics (AEC) and the Laboratory for High Energy Physics (LHEP).
Position Details
| Designation | PhD Student |
| Research Area | Experimental Low Energy Particle Physics / Fundamental Neutron Physics |
| Location | Bern and Villigen (PSI), Switzerland |
| Employment Type | 100%, Fixed-term |
| Application Deadline | Rolling basis (Open until filled) |
Research Area
The research is centered on the n2EDM experiment, which searches for the electric dipole moment of the neutron. This work provides a sensitive probe into physics beyond the Standard Model and investigates new sources of CP violation. The University of Bern is a key member of this international collaboration, contributing to hardware development, data analysis, and the control of systematic effects.
Eligibility and Qualification
- Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, an MSc degree in Physics.
- A strong interest in experimental physics, precision measurements, and computational methods.
- Experience with programming, Monte Carlo simulations, and statistical data analysis is highly advantageous.
- Ability to work in an international, collaborative environment.
Scholarship Description
The successful candidate will join the Fundamental Neutron and Precision Physics Group at AEC/LHEP. The primary responsibilities include:
- Performing data analysis and statistical studies.
- Conducting Monte Carlo simulations for the n2EDM program.
- Quantitative investigation of systematic effects within the experiment.
- Active participation in data-taking shifts and the operation/monitoring of the experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen.
- Collaborating with an international team of researchers.
