Summary
TRATON Group R&D is offering an Industrial PhD position focused on developing predictive kinetic models for catalytic hydrogen combustion. This research aims to enable efficient hydrogen powertrains with ultra-low emissions for future heavy-duty vehicles, bridging the gap between fundamental catalysis and engine-level simulations.
Designation
Industrial PhD Student
| Company | TRATON AB (Scania) |
| Position | Industrial PhD Student |
| Research Area | Kinetic Modelling & Catalysis |
| Location | Södertälje, Sweden |
| Academic Partner | Chalmers University of Technology |
| Application Deadline | October 30, 2026 |
Research Area
The research focuses on the development and validation of kinetic models for hydrogen oxidation over noble-metal catalysts (such as platinum). This work is critical for improving cold-start performance and enabling hydrogen-only ignition concepts in high-pressure direct injection hydrogen internal combustion engines (H₂-ICE).
Location
The position is primarily based at TRATON R&D Sweden in Södertälje, with time also spent at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg as part of the doctoral studies.
Eligibility/Qualification
- An M.Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Engineering Physics, Applied Physics, or a related field.
- A strong interest or background in catalysis, chemical kinetics, reaction engineering, or numerical modelling.
- Proficiency in translating experimental data into mathematical and numerical models.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Must fulfill the basic requirements for admission to doctoral studies at Chalmers University of Technology.
- Swedish language skills are considered a merit but not required.
Scholarship Description
As an Industrial PhD student, you will be an employee of TRATON AB and affiliated with the Division of Chemical Engineering at Chalmers University. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and validating kinetic models for catalytic hydrogen oxidation across various operating conditions.
- Applying models in 1D and 3D simulations for engine-relevant scenarios, including catalytic-assisted hydrogen ignition.
- Collaborating with academic and industrial partners within the PtHICE research project (including KTH, AVL List GmbH, and Johnson Matthey).
- Communicating research results through scientific publications and international conferences.
TRATON offers benefits including a wellness allowance, bonus schemes, flexible working hours, and a structured development plan.
How to Apply
Candidates should submit their application through the official Scania/TRATON career portal. The application must include:
- A comprehensive CV.
- Transcripts of records from both Bachelor’s and Master’s studies.
- Note: A cover letter is not required for this recruitment process.
Screening of candidates takes place on an ongoing basis. Logical and personality tests, as well as a background check, may be part of the selection process.
Last Date for Apply
